Our dear friend and loyal ElvisMatters supporter John Wilkinson has been taken to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery. John had complaints about heavy pains in his stomach, and the doctors advised him to have an operation. John is OK now, but it will take at least three weeks before he can leave the hospital. If you wish to do so, you can send John a personal card (X-mas card or Get well card). Update December 5, 2007 from ElvisMatters:

Good news! Our dear friend-of-the-family John Wilkinson is doing much better. He has been walking a little, and the doctors are pleased with his progress. He will stay for probably another 2 weeks at the hospital, until he feels ready to go home again.

John Wilkinson, our dear friend-of-the-family, has asked us to inform the fans about his medical condition. As you may have read on this site, John was taken to the hospital for surgery. With John’s permission, we can now give you more details. John was diagnosed with colon-cancer. During surgery two weeks ago, the doctors took away his colon, and a tumor. In order to be 100% sure that all the cancer cells are removed, John starts with chemotherapy later this month. In the meantime, he’s home to rest and recuperate.

Given the circumstances, John has cancelled all performances for the next 14 months – maybe longer, if necessary. But John told us that, if he feels better after that period of time, he will be ‘available’ to the fans once again. To quote John: “I will not give up on the fans, for as long as I may live.” What his plans include after his Sabbatical, is unsure. What matters now, is that he takes the rest he needs and deserves, and prepares himself for the chemotherapy that begins right after Christmas.

Just like it was before the surgery, we keep in close contact with John, and if there are developments, we will post the news – needless to say after checking with John first, or – like now – on his request. John will be kept informed on what’s happening in the Elvis world, but he’ll be ‘watching’ instead of ‘participating’.

Get well-cards for John are, of course, still very welcome at this address:

"HI PETER. HEARING YOUR VOICE ON THE PHONE GAVE ME A MUCH NEEDED BOOST TO MY SPIRITS! I'VE GOTTEN VERY POSITIVE RESPONSE TO MY DECISION TO TAKE A YEAR OR MORE OFF. I'LL MISS THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE ELVIS WORLD, BUT IT'S FINALLY TIME FOR JOHNNY TO TAKE CARE OF JOHNNY! THE VERY THOUGHT OF CANCER IS SCAREY NO MATTER WHAT KIND IT IS. KNOWING THAT YOU LOVE AND CARE ABOUT ME SO MUCH GIVES ME A LOT OF STRENGTH. I'VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT IN MY LIFE AND COME OUT A WINNER; I EXPECT TO DO THE SAME WITH THIS! THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE PRAYERS AND GOOD THOUGHTS. ESPECIALLY TO ELVISMATTERS AND THOSE TERRIFIC FANS! JUST KNOW THAT WE WILL BE THINKING MERRY CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS OF YOU ALL!
