[Repeat] You will reap just what you sow" NICK CAVE: "tupelo" (lp "the firstborn is dead", 1985) apokalyptischer blues-punk aus einer zeit, als cave noch ziemlich wild war. der lp-titel bezieht sich natürlich auch auf elvis bzw. dessen totgeborenen zwillingsbruder.

"Went to see the gypsy,
Stayin' in a big hotel. He smiled when he saw me coming, And he said, "Well, well, well." His room was dark and crowded, Lights were low and dim. "How are you?" he said to me, I said it back to him. I went down to the lobby To make a small call out. A pretty dancing girl was there, And she began to shout, "Go on back to see the gypsy. He can move you from the rear, Drive you from your fear, Bring you through the mirror. He did it in Las Vegas, And he can do it here." Outside the lights were shining On the river of tears, I watched them from the distance With music in my ears. I went back to see the gypsy, It was nearly early dawn. The gypsy's door was open wide But the gypsy was gone, And that pretty dancing girl, She could not be found. So I watched that sun come rising From that little Minnesota town. BOB DYLAN: "went to see the gypsy" (lp "self portrait, 1970) es gab viele spekulationen darüber, ob die im song geschilderte begegnung im "big hotel" wirklich stattgefunden hat. ich würde sagen, der songtext beschreibt eher einen tagtraum... besonders schön finde ich die zeile mit der sonne (sun records, alles klar?), die dylan von seinem heimatort in minnesota aus aufgehen sieht. dylan hat das ja in den fifties 1:1 erlebt, aber auch ich kenne dieses gefühl aus eigener erfahrung: du wächst in einem provinzkaff auf, fühlst dich als totaler alien, und dann bricht diese musik über dich herein und neue horizonte öffnen sich. oder, wie dylan das an anderer stelle mal ausgedrückt hat: "hearing elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail".

Alannah Myles - Black Velvet
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell Jimmy Rogers on the victrola up high Mama's dancing with baby on her shoulder The Sun is setting like molasses in the sky. The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything. Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for. CHORUS: Black velvet and that little boy smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring you to your knees Black velvet if you please. Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave White lightning, bound to drive you wild. Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl "Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true. Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for. Black velvet and that little boy smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring you to your knees Black velvet if you please. Every word of every song that he sang was for you. In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, What could you do? Black velvet and that little boy smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring you to your knees Black velvet if you please. Black velvet and that little boy smile Black velvet with that slow southern style A new religion that'll bring you to your knees Black velvet if you please. ...If you please If you please |

57 Channels (And Nothin' On)
Bruce Springsteen I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills With a trunkload of hundred thousand dollar bills Man came by to hook up my cable TV We settled in for the night my baby and me We switched ’round and ’round ’til half-past down There was fifty-seven channels and nothin’ on Well now home entertainment was my baby’s wish So I hopped into town for a satellite dish I tied it to the top of my Japanese car I came home and I pointed it out into the stars A message came back from the great beyond There’s fifty-seven channnels and nothin’ on Well we might’ a made some friends with some billionaires We might’ a got all nice and friendly if we’d made it upstairs All I got was a note that said "Bye-bye John Our love is fifty-seven channels and nothin’ on" So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast ’Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet And they bsted me for disturbin’ the almighty peace Judge said "What you got in your defense son ?" "Fifty-seven channels and nothin’ on" I can see by your eyes friend you’re just about gone Fifty-seven channels and nothin’ on Fifty-seven channels and nothin’... |
